FAQ

Why aren't more independent films distributed?

Indie filmmakers often assume that distributors will pick up their films.

Because they are confident that the public will love their film, they believe distributors would be willing to buy it.

This is not often the case. Distributors often benefit from independent filmmakers.

They will use techniques such as delaying the release of a movie until after the awards season has ended.

They may delay the release of a low budget film until after summer blockbuster season begins.

Distributors are also trying to keep films off the streets until audiences have already spent hundreds upon thousands of dollars on tickets or popcorn.

They don’t want to miss out on these profits.

What is the average number of movies Hollywood makes in a year?

Hollywood studios produce around 3,000 films per year. Yes, that's correct, three thousand!

These films are marketed by Hollywood, which spends billions of dollars. They spend millions producing them. They also spend millions on marketing them. How many of these movies do you think end up in theaters?

The answer is most likely between 200 and 300. What happens to the 2,700+ additional films? The majority of these films are either direct-to video releases or sit in storage.

But not all of them are destined to go unseen. Some of them were selected for distribution via Netflix Prime, Amazon Prime and Hulu Plus, iTunes or Google Play.

Hence, why aren't there more of them? Why aren't they released in theaters? They're too costly to produce.

And if they were cheaper to produce, they'd be released into theaters.

Here's where you find me. I will assist you in finding the best possible method to release your movie in theaters.

I will teach you how to increase your return on investment (ROI), as well as increasing your chances of seeing the movie in theaters.

We have to face it...

It can be difficult to get your movie into theaters. The process is long, complex and full of legalities.

It could also be costly before you even start.

You have a very short window in which to distribute your film.

There isn't enough time in between the time a movie is finished and when its theatrical run starts.

What happens when my film doesn't perform well at the box office?

A film that does poorly at the box-office could lead to many problems.

You may decide to alter the marketing strategy for your film.

Second, you may decide to rewrite the script.

Third, you may decide to add characters.

Fourth, it is possible to decide to eliminate certain characters.

Fifth, you might choose to cut scenes.

Sixth, and you might decide that it wasn't worthwhile making the film.

What percentage of box office profits goes to marketing?

Marketing budgets can account for as much as 20% to 40% of a film’s overall budget. Marketing is crucial to any film's success.

Without marketing, nobody will know anything about your film. People won't pay for it if they don’t know about it.

Can I create my own distribution organization?

No. No.

You don't have to distribute films from other people, but you must still follow certain rules.

You can't, for example, charge different prices to different theaters. And you can't charge different fees to different customers.

You also can't sell your services to other companies.

How To

How to get an honor star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF) was established in 1960 by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The HWOF, located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard Los Angeles, California. It is composed of 2,711 stars embedded into sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents someone who made motion pictures, television or radio, as well as music and other aspects of popular culture. There are currently 1,922 active individuals on the HWOF.

To become a member of HWOF you will need to submit your name at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. This submits your name then to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, you receive a certificate of eligibility, which includes your name, date of birth, city of residence, occupation, and category. A bronze plaque with the name of your choice is included. This plaque will be attached to a base of concrete in front the designated star.

You can apply for a star if a current member of the HWOF nominated you or if you made significant contributions to movies, television, radio, theatre, music, or something else considered part of "popular culture." A committee reviews the nominations and determines whether they should be approved. If they do, they will send a letter explaining their decision to the applicant at his/her home address. If the person accepts the nomination, he/she receives a second letter confirming acceptance. The applicant then pays $25 to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which forwards the money to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues a check payable the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then sends the check directly to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays artists or organizations whose applications were accepted. The artist or organization then pays the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce half the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs takes the other half.

Once the artist has received his/her star, he/she becomes eligible to be included in the HWOF. You must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce the balance due to be included on the HWOF. The amount due depends upon how many years ago your first nomination was. If you were first honoured in 1990, then you would owe $15,000. If you were nominated for the first time in 1990, you would owe $15,000.

You will need to contact Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be removed from the HWOF. They will take care of removing your name from the list permanently.

How old does one have to get a star on the HWOF?

One needs to be at least 18 years old when being nominated. To receive a Star, one must still be living at the time. After receiving a Star, one can still be Nominated for another star after ten Years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Family members may nominate you to be a star. If there are no known living relatives, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place the memorial marker in front of it.

Why don't people just use a different street instead of having stars all over the place?

The HWOF was not created to be a historical landmark. It is intended to honor all those who have made film history possible.

What happened to all the stars stolen? Around 1,200 stars were taken by the thieves. Each star is approximately 250-300 lbs in weight. That's about 4 tons of stars!
